Denver’s 80238 Made Affordable- Bluff Lake Apartments

Tashaka Bluff Lakes Affordable Housing

By: Marissa Jones

Bluff Lake Apartments, built by Mercy housing, is a part of Denver’s 82038 Affordable Housing program. This housing is for those who earn between 30%-50% of the area’s median income. Bluff Lake Apartments resident Tashaka chose to make Bluff Lake Apartments his home almost three years ago.

Tashaka had recently gotten out of a nursing home and was living with his sister when he heard about the Bluff Lake Apartments. He filled out an application, and then waited in line at 8am to drop off his application. When a potential resident drops off their application, the Bluff Lake team interviews the candidate to see if their income qualifies them to be a resident. Similar to market rate apartments, the application review process is inclusive of a background check. When asked what advice he would give those interested in affordable housing rental opportunities in Denver’s 80238, Tashaka suggested, “Make sure you have your paperwork done right and I wish you the best of luck.”

Bluff Lake Apartments has 19 units for residents who are disabled, which was precisely what Tashaka needed. Tashaka shared that it took him 30 days from when he submitted his application to move into his one-bedroom apartment.

Tashaka says that, “[his] situation is good.” The Bluff Lake Apartments have several amenities including access to a food bank, a laundry room on every floor and a computer room. Residents receive bulletins monthly on their doors letting them know about upcoming events such as bingo. Residents can participate in counseling, job awareness, as well as health awareness fairs. Some events residents participate in can earn them a $10 gift card to King Soopers and other retailers. Tashaka suggested that he and the team at Bluff Lake Apartments start serving breakfast for the kids on Saturdays and the complex hopes to implement this idea soon. “I’m a very blessed man.” He went on to state that, “It’s a nice community and if you need a place to stay it’s nice. I’m satisfied with where I’m at.”
